Getting around Paris is quick, easy, and inexpensive. The Parisian public transport system is one of the safest and most efficient in the world. Expect trains with comprehensive coverage of the city, spacious buses, WiFi signal, and high-speed travel.
The Paris metro is an extensive underground system with 301 stations, with trains running every few minutes. From Monday to Thursday and Sunday, the trains run from 5:30 a.m. until 1:15 a.m. On Friday and Saturday lines are open later, until 2:15 a.m. Tickets or travel passes can be purchased at any metro station.
The RER is a commuter line train system that operates five express trains, covering eight zones between Paris and the rest of Île-de-France. You can catch this far-reaching service at many transit hubs, for instance the Gare du Nord and Notre Dame. Operating hours vary from around 5:15 a.m. to after midnight.
Well-appointed buses in Paris offer a wider variety of destinations than the metro, with a much more scenic view. Metro tickets and passes can be used to hop on the bus. Keep in mind that purchasing tickets from vending machines in the stations are cheaper than purchasing a ticket onboard.
Another option for travelling above-ground is the Tramway, which connects the city center and suburbs across seven tram lines. Tram tickets cannot be purchased on board, but it accepts the same tickets used for the metro, RER and bus networks.
